National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW), held April 20-24, 2026, is an event held each spring throughout the United States to raise awareness as roadway work ramps into full swing. It is a partnership between state departments of transportation (DOT), national road safety organizations, government agencies, private companies and individuals.

The objective of National Work Zone Awareness Week is to remind everyone to pay attention as they approach and drive through work zones so motorists and roadway workers remain safe.

This year, the 27th national event will be hosted by the Connecticut DOT with the theme of “Safe actions save lives”.

Drivers are urged to take note of reduced speed limits, eliminate distractions and be watchful for roadway workers and their equipment.

Additionally, this year’s annual 2026 National Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-By Incidents will take place during National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW), with the former’s goal of raising awareness of struck-by hazards, which may include falling and flying objects, vehicles and heavy equipment, and crane swing hazards.

Struck-by incidents are the number one cause of nonfatal injuries in construction and the second leading cause of death among construction workers, according to The Center for Construction Research and Training.

Ultimately, by taking part in either or both stand-downs, learning and emphasizing these awareness events, workers and the public are increasing their chances of getting home safely each day.
